3-5 Years

We have several full day, 3-5 age group child care programs. These programs have a group size of 25 and maintain an early childhood educator to child ratio of 8:1.  The hours of operation are 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

The British Columbia Early Learning Framework¬†informs the¬†curriculum of all UBC Child Care Service programs, including the three-to-five¬†centres. That framework emphasizes the importance of interpersonal¬†relationships, flexible dynamic environments and play for children’s learning. The framework¬†identifies four¬†key inter-related areas of early learning: well-being and belonging, exploration and creativity, languages and literacies and social responsibility and diversity.¬†Curricular choices made by the early childhood educators reflect the learning goals identified within these four areas. Examples of¬†goals range from “young children can feel a sense of security, self-respect and self-regulation” (p.18) to¬† “young children can identify and try possible solutions to problems in meaningful contexts and situations” (p.23), to ¬†“young children can be curious about vocabulary, concepts and written language” (p.28).

Our programs foster learning by emphasizing opportunities for negotiation with others, problems solving, exploring curiosities, engaging with materials, and expressing creativity.
